SIPTI at 58th Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America

December 20th, 2010

The three SIPTI laboratories participated in the ESA Annual Conference Meeting

The Douglas Lab:
Calum Russell gave a talk on our NSF-funded research:
The proteome of the pea aphid bacteriocyte and the symbiotic bacterium Buchnera aphidicola.

Eric van Fleet, Sarkaria Graduate Fellow (2009-10), presented a poster:
Phenoloxidase and the paradox of immunity in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum.
Eric won the best poster award. Our congratulations to Eric!

Sophie Bouvaine Angela Douglas and our collaborators Spence Behmer and Bob Grebenok presented a poster toward aphid resistant crops with modified sterol content to the NRI/AFRI awardees meeting held on December 11-12th at the ESA Conference venue. This research is funded by a research grant from NRI/AFRI.

Angela Douglas co-organized a one-day symposium with Kirk Anderson (Carl Hayden Bee Research Center) on Diversity and Function of Microbial Symbioses in Solitary and Social Insects. Twenty-two invited speakers from across the US and also UK, France and Sweden contributed talks on a wide range of microbial symbioses in insects.

The Scott Lab:
Jeff Scott presented a talk on the evolution of insecticide resistance in the symposium entitled "Pioneers and Innovators of Entomological Science", and presented a poster on the sensitivity of honey bees to insecticides.

Frank Rinkevich, Sarkaria Graduate Fellow (2007-08) gave a talk on his work with spinosad resistance in the diamondback moth.

The Wang Lab:
Ping Wang gave a talk in the USDA NRI/AFRI grant awardees meeting, entitled "Understanding a novel mechanism of Bt resistance in the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni".

Xiaozhao Song, Sarkaria Graduate Fellow (2007-08), gave a talk on her thesis research "Multiple resistance or cross resistance? A case study of dual resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab in Trichoplusia ni".
