Student Training

SIPTI provides funds to support graduate students

Currently-supported students

Eric van Fleet

Eric is investigating the interactions between aphids and their bacterial endosymbionts, to determine the effects of endosymbionts on the aphid immune system. Eric is working in the lab of Angela Douglas. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry at Ithaca College, Ithaca N.Y.

Previous recipients of SIPTI support

George Guan-Hua Lin

George is researching the molecular mechanism of cytochrome P450 mediated-resistance in the house fly, in the lab of Dr Jeff Scott.
George received his B.S. and M.S. in Entomology from the National Taiwan University at Taipei, Taiwan.

Frank Rinkevich

While supported by SIPTI funds, Frank discovered that the expression patterns of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor genes in Tribolium castaneum are far more diverse than previously realized, with important implications for receptor function and interactions with insecticides. This research has been published: Rinkevich FD & Scott JG. 2009. Transcriptional diversity and allelic variation in nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. Insect Molecular Biology 18, 233-242.

Frank received his B.S. in Environmental Studies at Millersville University (PA) in 2002 and an M.S. from Cornell University in 2005 before enrolling as a PhD student in the lab of Dr Jeff Scott.

Xiaozhao Song

While supported by SIPTI funds, Xiaozhao demonstrated that the midgut of caterpillars of the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni produces a protease inhibitor of low molecular weight (<3 kDa) that likely contributes to the capacity of these caterpillars to overcome the deleterious effect of proteases in their food plants.
Xiaozhao received her B.S. in Biological Sciences from the Shanghai Fisheries University of China and her M.S. in Biological Sciences from Bowling Green State University.

Adam Chin Nin Wong

Adam is investigating the impact of resident microorganisms on the physiology of Drosophila, working in the lab of Dr Angela Douglas.
Adam received a B.Sc. in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of York, UK, and his M.Phil in Pathology at the University of Hong Kong.
